| Field of research | One of the most fundamental problems underlying sensorimotor integration is the need to transform the frame of reference of the sensory input into the frame of reference used by the specific motor system. This coordinate transformation is most likely one of the major functions of the posterior parietal cortex. To reveal the basic principles of this transformation, single-unit activity recorded from various areas in the parietal cortex and the frontal cortex of rhesus monkeys during the execution of visual-driven eye, head and hand movements is analyzed. In addition, the deficits following punctuate lesions in these areas as well as the effects of intra-cortical micro-stimulation are monitored. Finally, the results from eye movement studies and psychophysical studies with healthy human subjects help to understand the cortical processing in general. | |||||||||||||
| Methods | (1) Psychophysical, eye movements, and single-unit recordings in awake and behaving subhuman primates; (2) Psychophysical and eye movement recordings from healthy human subjects. | |||||||||||||
