Virtual Environments: Current Topics in Psychological Research – VECTOR Workshop

from: July 27th – July 29th, 2016 at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Calwerstr. 14, Tübingen.

For nearly 20 years, researchers from the fields of psychology, neuroscience, psychiatry, and computer science are intrigued by the prospects of Virtual Reality (VR) setups for understanding human behavior and cognition.

For most of this time, VR equipment was expensive and highly susceptibility to motion sickness. In the last three years, these issues were partially solved and the combination of low-cost, high resolution displays with accurate head-tracking provides us with affordable head-mounted displays. These developments renewed the interest in VR in general and lead to the development of new input devices that allow to interact with virtual worlds in an immersive way. Accordingly, novel perspectives for fundamental and applied research endeavors currently emerge, fostering interdisciplinary cooperation to tap the full potential of the new technologies.

Our aim is to bring both experts and young scientists together, to discuss the prospects of VR technologies for psychological experiments, therapies, trainings, and immersive user experiences. The workshop focuses on the application of VR in a psychological context, but we welcome everyone who is interested in the application of VR technologies. The workshop will be a forum to present and discuss recent results, ongoing work and new technologies. Aside from talk session, posters, and presentations from three invited VR researchers, we will explore the practical implementation of VR using online motion capture, head-mounted displays and a game engine in different tutorials. Furthermore, the Spatial and Social Cognition Group, as well as the Space and Body Perception Group from the Max Planck Institute offer lab tours. There will also be a tutorial session held by our sponsors SMI and VTplus who will present their hard- and software solutions for psychological research in virtual reality – with a special focus on the application of eye tracking in VR.
