Field of Research
Impact of early brain compromise on brain development and function. We could characterize CP (cerebral palsy) as a mainly early lesional CNS disease and are now specially interested in the organisation and reorganisation after early brain lesions (for sensorimotor functions, language and visuo-perception), which we characterize on a morphological and functional level including functional imaging and also behavioural and cognitive measures. In a EU wide network (surveillance of CP in Europe), we are involved in studying the epidemiology of CP, which is especially prevalent in preterm children.
Another field of interest is the clinical and biochemical characterization of Metachromatic Leukodystrophy and Krabbe Disease, lysosomal storage disorders leading to demyelination. Description of the natural course using standardized functional measures, recovery after bone marrow transplantation and morphology function relationship with respect to leukodystrophic changes are topics of current research.
