Field of Research

Heading the group ‘Neurophysiology & Interventional Neuropsychiatry’ at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy my research focus is on the behavioral and neurophysiological effects, mechanisms and modulators of brain stimulation. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS) are used for the assessment and modification of healthy as well as disturbed cortical function e.g. in tinnitus, auditory hallucinations, Tourette syndrome and depression. Exploration of the neurophysiological correlates of these effects as assessed with electroencephalography (EEG), evoked potentials (EP), peripheral neurophysiology and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) provides new insights into the interaction of brain activity and stimulation. This knowledge is used to develop new options to treat neuropsychiatric disorders and test their efficacy in controlled clinical trials.
