Field of Research

Multiple sclerosis is a disease which affects mostly young adults. In multiple sclerosis, mature oligodendrocytes are lost leaving demyelinated axons at a high risk to degenerate. The consequence of this is accumulating neurological disability throughout the course of the disease. Remyelination of axons through oligodendrocyte precursor cells is possible but does not always occur in patients with multiple sclerosis especially at the later stages of the disease. The reasons for these differences and decreasing repair capacities remain unclear, mainly because the interactions between axons and oligodendroglial cells that promote remyelination are largely unknown. In this independent project, I investigate axon-glia interactions during de- and remyelination in different model systems by applying different morphological and electrophysiological approaches.

This project is funded by the German Research Council (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG).
